Blood Cancer

New findings about a fatal form of blood cancer could aid the development of new drugs with significantly less harmful side effects than existing chemotherapy.

The discovery could lead to novel treatments that efficiently eliminate blood cancer cells in acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), without harming healthy blood cells.

Researchers have discovered how a protein in the body plays a key role in AML - an aggressive cancer of white blood cells with very poor survival rates.

A short and simple video tutorial with animations, to help you gain a basic understanding of Leukemia, Myeloma, Lymphoma, Myelodysplastic syndrome, and the Myeloproliferative diseases including Myelofibrosis. These are the main diseases relating to cancers of the blood system (hematological malignancy)

The team of María Domínguez, researcher for the Neuroscience Institute, joint venture of the Miguel Hernández University (UMH) in Elche and the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), has managed to prove for the first time that an important factor in the development of acute pediatric lymphoblastic leukemia is inflammation. Moreover, researchers have readied a screening system in order to choose the medicines which are already being used to fight inflammatory processes which could be effective against this type of childhood cancer and without side effects.

Blood cancer is a general term that covers a variety of diseases, including leukaemia and lymphoma. These are cancers that are caused by uncontrolled growth of particular types of cells in our blood. In this animation for Barts Cancer Institute's Centre for Haemato-Oncology, we go into a bit more detail about how our blood is made, how mistakes in the genomes of blood stem cells can lead to blood cancer. We'll also discuss some of the treatment options that are currently being used, as well as some of the new techniques currently being developed in the lab.
