Women with early, low risk, hormone-driven breast cancer are less likely to have a recurrence of their disease if they have radiotherapy after surgery, as well as anti-hormone treatment, according to results from a trial that has followed 869 women for ten years.

Cervical cancer negative for the human papilloma virus (HPV) is rare but more aggressive: it is more frequently diagnosed at advanced stages, with more metastasis and reduced survival. These are the conclusions of a study co-led by ISGlobal, an institution supported by "la Caixa", the Hospital Clinic and the University of Barcelona.

THIS VIDEO SHOWS PROCEDURE OF CERVICAL LYMPH NODE BIOPSY FROM POSTERIOR CERVICAL NODE IN A 27 YEARS FEMALE SUFFERING FROM GENERALIZED LYMPHADENOPATHY

Sentinel lymph node biopsies, where lymph nodes are surgically removed to check for signs of breast cancer spread, could be safely avoided for some women, according to research presented at the 11th European Breast Cancer Conference.

A team of scientists led by Virginia Commonwealth University physicist Jason Reed, Ph.D., have developed new nanomapping technology that could transform the way disease-causing genetic mutations are diagnosed and discovered. Described in a study published today in the journal Nature Communications, this novel approach uses high-speed atomic force microscopy (AFM) combined with a CRISPR-based chemical barcoding technique to map DNA nearly as accurately as DNA sequencing while processing large sections of the genome at a much faster rate.

An interview with David West, CEO and Hunter Jackson, CSO, Proscia, conducted by April Cashin-Garbutt, MA (Cantab)

How has the digitization of pathology slides impacted cancer diagnostics?

David: It is worth noting that in the U.S. and in many countries, digital pathology is still at a very early stage, compared to many other fields that were digitized 15 or 20 years ago such as radiology.

What is a sentinel lymph node biopsy?

A sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) is a type of surgery. It’s used to help diagnose and treat breast cancer. It can help your doctor determine the stage of your breast cancer, including whether or not it has spread outside of your breast. The knowledge your doctor gains from this procedure will guide your treatment plan.

INTRODUCTION:Endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA) is the initial modality of choice in sampling mediastinal lymphadenopathy. It is possible to obtain both cytological and histological samples using both 21-gauge and 22-gauge EBUS-TBNA needles. The current study was undertaken to compare the diagnostic yield of cytology and histology samples obtained by the same EBUS-TBNA 21-gauge needle.

Test Overview

A lymph node biopsy removes lymph node tissue to be looked at under a microscope for signs of infection or a disease, such as cancer. Other tests may also be used to check the lymph tissue sample, including a culture, genetic tests, or tests to study the body's immune system  (immunological tests).

Lymph nodes are part of the immune system. They are found in the neck, behind the ears, in the armpits, and in the chest, belly, and groin.
